What is Tense?
সংজ্ঞা:
যখন কোনো কাজ সম্পন্ন হয়, সম্পন্ন হওয়ার সময় বা Verb-এর যে রূপের মাধ্যমে তা বোঝানো হয়, তাকে Tense বলে।
🔹 Tense-এর তিনটি প্রধান ভাগ:
- Present (বর্তমান)
- Past (অতীত)
- Future (ভবিষ্যৎ)
প্রত্যেকটির আবার ৪টি উপভাগ:
- Indefinite/Simple
- Continuous
- Perfect
- Perfect Continuous
Present Tense
1. Present Indefinite (Simple Present)
Rule: Habitual action / Universal truth / Regular actions
Examples:
- Sujan goes to school every day.
→ সুজন প্রতিদিন স্কুলে যায়। - The earth moves round the sun.
→ পৃথিবী সূর্যকে ঘিরে ঘোরে। - He gets up at 7 o’clock.
→ সে সকাল ৭টায় ঘুম থেকে ওঠে।
Practice:
“She __ (play) football every day.” → plays
2. Present Continuous
Rule: এখন কাজ চলছে / Future arrangement / পরিবর্তন
Structure: am/is/are + V-ing
Examples:
- He is writing a letter.
→ সে একটি চিঠি লিখছে। - The Headmaster is going to Dhaka next Monday.
→ প্রধান শিক্ষক আগামী সোমবার ঢাকা যাচ্ছেন। - The world climate is changing rapidly.
→ বিশ্বের জলবায়ু দ্রুত পরিবর্তিত হচ্ছে।
Practice:
“They __ (work) at this moment.” → are working
3. Present Perfect
Rule: সদ্য শেষ হওয়া কাজ / ফলাফল বর্তমানেও আছে
Structure: have/has + V³
Examples:
- I have just seen it.
→ আমি এটি এখনই দেখেছি। - Have you ever visited Cox’s Bazar?
→ তুমি কি কখনও কক্সবাজার গিয়েছো?
Practice:
“She __ (finish) her homework already.” → has finished
4. Present Perfect Continuous
Rule: কোনো কাজ কিছু সময় ধরে চলছে
Structure: have/has been + V-ing
Examples:
- He has been working here for three years.
→ সে এখানে তিন বছর ধরে কাজ করছে। - It has been raining since 7 am.
→ সকাল ৭টা থেকে বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে।
Practice:
“I __ (read) since morning.” → have been reading
Past Tense
5. Past Indefinite
Rule: অতীতে নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে সম্পন্ন হওয়া কাজ
Examples:
- I plucked the flowers.
→ আমি ফুলগুলো তুলেছিলাম। - She walked every morning.
→ সে প্রতিদিন সকালে হাঁটতো।
Practice:
“He __ (go) to school yesterday.” → went
6. Past Continuous
Rule: অতীতে কাজ চলছিল / দুটি কাজ একসাথে
Examples:
- I was sleeping when the phone rang.
→ ফোন বাজলে আমি ঘুমাচ্ছিলাম। - She was dancing while I was reading.
→ আমি যখন পড়ছিলাম, তখন সে নাচছিল।
Practice:
“They __ (play) when I called.” → were playing
7. Past Perfect
Rule: অতীতে এক কাজ অন্য কাজের আগে হলে →
আগের কাজ = Past Perfect, পরের কাজ = Past Indefinite
Examples:
- No sooner had he gone out than it began to rain.
→ সে বের হয়েই বৃষ্টি শুরু হয়ে গেল। - He had reached home before he reached the station.
→ সে স্টেশনে পৌঁছানোর আগেই বাসায় পৌঁছে গিয়েছিল।
Practice:
“After he __ (finish), I started.” → had finished
8. Past Perfect Continuous
Rule: অতীতে নির্দিষ্ট সময় ধরে চলমান ও শেষ হওয়া কাজ
Examples:
- He had been collecting stamps for several times.
→ সে বহুবার ডাকটিকিট সংগ্রহ করছিল। - They had been working there for four years.
→ তারা সেখানে চার বছর ধরে কাজ করছিল।
Practice:
“She __ (wait) for two hours before he came.” → had been waiting
Future Tense
9. Future Indefinite
Rule: ভবিষ্যতে কোনো কাজ হবে
Structure: will/shall + V¹
Examples:
- Rafiq will go to London in June.
→ রফিক জুন মাসে লন্ডন যাবে। - Sadia will come tomorrow.
→ সাদিয়া আগামীকাল আসবে।
Practice:
“I __ (help) you tomorrow.” → will help
10. Future Continuous
Rule: ভবিষ্যতের নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে কাজ চলবে
Examples:
- I shall be playing football.
→ আমি ফুটবল খেলছি থাকব। - The PM will be arriving in a few minutes.
→ প্রধানমন্ত্রী কয়েক মিনিটের মধ্যে পৌঁছাবেন।
Practice:
“At 9pm, I __ (study).” → will be studying
11. Future Perfect
Rule: ভবিষ্যতের নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের মধ্যে কাজ শেষ হবে
Structure: will/shall have + V³
Examples:
- I shall have done the work by 5:00 pm.
→ আমি বিকাল ৫টার মধ্যে কাজটি করে ফেলব। - We shall have finished before you come.
→ তুমি আসার আগেই আমরা শেষ করে ফেলব।
Practice:
“By next week, he __ (complete) the project.” → will have completed
12. Future Perfect Continuous
Rule: ভবিষ্যতের নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে কতক্ষণ ধরে কাজ চলবে তা বোঝাতে
Structure: will have been + V-ing
Examples:
- He will have been reading for two hours.
→ সে দুই ঘণ্টা ধরে পড়ছে থাকবে। - She will have been waiting until he comes.
→ সে অপেক্ষা করতে থাকবে যতক্ষণ না সে আসে।
Practice:
“By 2026, I __ (work) here for 5 years.” → will have been working
